Photodynamic Therapy - PDT

Vascular Treatment

Treatment - IPL - Vascular Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light can be used to treat various degrees of vascularity on the face, neck and decolletage. Some machines will treat the fine diffuse redness where you cannot actually see individual blood vessels, other, more powerful pulsed light systems with different wavelength configurations can treat specific individual blood vessels and spider nevi commonly found around the nose, cheeks and chin as well. At The Fleming Clinics we have medical and cosmetic intense pulsed light systems and so can treat both types of vessels.

Shorter wave lengths of light are needed that include oxyhaemoglobin absorption peaks found at 542, 577 and 630 nm. When the light is absorbed into the blood vessel, it coagulates the blood. The heat from this reaction will damage the walls of the vessels which are only a single cell thick. Results will take about a month to 6 weeks to see, when the damaged vessel tissues have been reabsorbed by the body, and collagen replaces it.

Sometimes individual vessels will go in a single treatment, sometimes 2 -3 visits are necessary. Diffuse redness may take 2 - 4 treatments to reduce from a dense, high colour in the area to a much calmer look.

As with any other work with pulsed light, a gel is applied to the skin then the applicator is held in place and the light is emitted. If individual blood vessels are being treated, then it may only be a portion of the light guide on the skin. If it is general diffuse redness then it will be pulsed across the whole skin surface.

There will be a quick hot sting felt with the treatment, which normally subsides very quickly. Sometimes it can feel a bit like sunburn for a day or so, but this isn't often. There will be erythema [increased redness] for a few minutes or up to a day or so. There can sometimes be some swelling, which can be quite pronounced with some people. The swelling may last for a day or maybe up to 3 -4 days. This is quite normal, and leaves no residual signs or problems.

Results of treatment are seen in about 4 - 6 weeks, when repeat treatment can be performed if necessary.

As always, skin must be kept out of the sun and sun screen worn. The use of good after care products is strongly recommended.
