Pigmentation Treatments
Intense Pulsed Light - Pigmentation Removal Description Intense pulsed light is very good at removing, or fading, pigmentation caused by sun damage. This is the brown patches [lesions] and freckles found on faces, décolletage, backs of hands and forearms that have developed over the years to exposure from the sun. There are many other causes of pigmented lesions, and not all will respond to pulsed light treatment. Sun spots, and freckles caused directly by exposure to sun respond very well to this treatment. This sort of pigmentation is found in the epidermis or upper layer of the skin. To treat this pigmentation, wavelengths of light that are strongly attracted to melanin but have shallow penetration into skin are needed. This means using an applicator with a different set of wave lengths to that used for hair removal. The length of time the light is pulsed for is also shorter than that for hair removal.
The skin must be checked by a doctor first to make sure there are no signs of any skin cancers and that it is suitable for intense pulsed light treatment. There must be no sun tan on the surrounding skin either and no exposure to sun for 6 weeks pre or post treatment. A consultation and test patches will be performed to check suitability for treatment.
