Photodynamic Therapy - PDT

Description


PDT is an exciting advanced step for skin rejuvenation and anti aging.  It can be used for sun damage, pigmented lesions, mottled, blotchy skin, fine lines, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, actinic keratosis and many more conditions.  PDT uses a photosensitising agent, 5ALA, to increase the effects of IPL, Laser or LED on skin.  5ALA is applied to very clean skin that has been well prepared in advance.  The substance is allowed to incubate for anything from a half to 2 hours depending on the skin condition. 
5ALA is absorbed preferentially into damaged tissue rather than normal tissue.  When absorbed it changes into protoporphyrin 1X [Pp1X], which is highly photosensitive, so when the laser, IPL or LED is applied t the skin, it will react with the Pp1X, activating it to produce singlet oxygen which is a free radical.  Singlet oxygen will destroy the damaged, unhealthy tissue leaving the surrounding healthy tissue untouched. 
The skin will remain photo [light] sensetive for about 24 to 48 hours after the treatment so strict avoidance of sunlight and bright interior light is very necessary during this time.  The skin will most likely be red, you need to be prepared for possible swelling for a day or so and maybe some peeling.  This is all part of the process and is a sign of a successful treatment.

How many treatments are required will depend on the amount of damage the skin has accumulated.  A program may require between 1 and 4 treatments.  The skin may also need preparation with peels and AHA home care to prepare the surface epidermis for maximum absorption of the 5ALA.  A thorough consultation will give you a guide if you are suitable for this treatment, what it can do for you, what sort of preparation you will need and how to proceed with treatment, and of course test patches, photographs etc will be performed.
